3SIXT Quick Charge Wireless Cellphone Charger

Forget fumbling with USB cables – PAT PILCHER finds the 3SIXT Quick Charge Wireless Charger makes for an easy bedtime routine.

If you’re the lucky owner of one of the latest flagship smartphones from Samsung, Apple or LG, the odds are good that you’ve probably heard of the wonders of wireless charging.

For me, keeping my phone charged used to involve fumbling around in the dead of night trying to plug in a USB cable, and it was about as much fun as DIY root canal surgery done with a hacksaw and spanner.

That changed (and thankfully for the better) with wireless charging. Keeping my smartphone running became as easy as plunking it down on a wireless charge pad. There’s no fumbling around and it quickly became part of my bedtime routine.

While I’ve long had a wireless charge pad in my upstairs bedroom, the downstairs room lacked one. This translated into a flat phone when guests were staying.

Enter 3SIXT’s Quick Charge Wireless Charge pad. It might be from a third party, but it is based around the Qi wireless power standard, so it works a treat with my handset.

Design-wise there really isn’t much to see. The 3SIXT Wireless Charge pad comes from the Darth Vader school of design. This sees it done out in a black-on-black finish, which will look at home in most settings. Flipping it over reveals non-slip rubber feet (there’s also rubber pads on its top to keep your phone in place and scratch free) too.

I like the unobtrusive design. It isn’t caked with LEDs, nor is it gaudy. 3SIXT have wisely chosen a discrete design and focused on making a widget that gets the job done quickly.

When I say quick, I’m not kidding. The 3SIXT charge pad is powered by Qualcomm Quick Charge 3.0 Class A technology. This means it can deliver up to 15W of power for super-fast charging that provides comparable charge times to a standard wired charger. There is a caveat – The iPhone X and iPhone 8 only support 7.5W while Samsung’s latest phones support 10W. At the moment, the only big name brand that supports 15W wireless charging is LG.

In use, the 3SIXT passed its most important test, which revolves around my biggest annoyance with wireless charge pads: with many of them, It can be tricky to see if your phone is charging. With the 3SIXT, once the phone has been placed on the charge pad correctly, an LED illuminates. The charge pad is also fairly forgiving in that I didn’t have to jiggle my phone about to get it correctly positioned.

Another equally important plus is that the 3SIXT charge pad also juiced up my phone when it was still in its case, something some third party wireless chargers struggle with.

All told the 3SIXT wireless charge pad worked well. That and a sensible, compact and minimalist design make it a real winner.
