1001 Albums You Must Die Before You Hear
#42: Onision – I Am Trash (2020)

Shock and horror! Onision keeps his trap shut and almost makes a good album, writes a visually shocked MATT KELLY.

Almost. Don’t get too excited.

Some figures on previous Onision albums:

2019’s The Banana Man: 34 songs, 80 minutes.

2019’s I’m A Meme: 50 songs, 152 minutes.

2020’s I Am Trash: 66 songs, 170 FUCKING MINUTES.

So it’s probably just a case of Stockholm syndrome when I say that of the three Onision albums I’ve covered (and I’m fairly sure I’m not going to cover any more; there are others but I’m drawing a line) this is um, the least worst?

Sickened as I am to hear “his best yet” coming out of my mouth with regards to an Onision release, there’s a simple and not very flattering reason for that and it’s that the album is mostly instrumentals.

With Onision keeping his vile, narcissistic, and supernaturally unfunny mouth shut for much of the running time, what we have is a lengthy slab of electronic instrumentals with troubling names and a melancholy mood. They sound like Undertale soundtrack rejects for the most part but some of them aren’t that bad,  to be honest.

Matthew Kelly is the most important person in the music industry – the type of obsessive nerd without whom it would have no reason to produce box sets and nine-hour long documentaries.
