Fujifilm Releases X100S Premium Compact

May 5, 2013

FUJIFILM HAS ANNOUNCED the release of a successor to the rather lovely X100 premium compact camera.

The X100S boasts the retro styling and compact body of its predecessor, but has evolved further with the introduction of a higher-definition Hybrid Viewfinder, and a new sensor and processor.

WD-Fujifilm-X100SThe X100S offers a newly developed 16.3 million pixels APS-C X-Trans CMOS II sensor and an EXR Processor II, which increase resolution by approximately 25 percent and reduce noise by more than 30 percent over the X100. With the removal of the optical low pass filter and the input of the new processor, the X100S is said to create images with minimal graininess – even at high ISO settings.

The new sensor also has built-in Phase Detection pixels, creating what’s claimed to be the world’s fastest AF, operating in as little as 0.08 seconds. Additionally, the new processor offers faster response times, with a start-up time of approximately 0.5 seconds, a shooting interval of 0.5 seconds and a shutter lag of 0.01 seconds.

The X100S offers the world’s first Digital Split Image feature, which displays dual images on the left and right to be lined up for manual focusing. This feature enables accurate focusing, especially when working with an open aperture or macro shooting. A handy Focus Peak Highlight function, which highlights high contrast areas also allows for smoother and more precise focusing.

There are now two viewfinder views – the Optical Viewfinder (OVF) allows users to see their subject as they do with the naked eye, while the Electronic viewfinder (EVF) lets them visually check focus, exposure, white balance and depth of field while composing shots.

The X100S will sell for $1999 and is available now from leading photo retail stores.
