Labour Day Album Sides All Day Monday On The Sound

October 19, 2012

THIS MONDAY THE 22nd of October is Labour Day, a long awaited public holiday and a much needed day off for us Kiwis.

My favourite radio station – The Sound – is going to be playing entire album sides off the original vinyl all day Monday. As the station’s web site puts it: “We’re bringing the sound of vinyl back by playing whole sides from Van Morrison to The Eagles – Dire Straits to The Beatles and many more from your record collection.”

This station plays some of the best music on NZ radio (in my ever so humble opinion, of course) and they do it with the least DJ chatter, which is a real point of difference. One hopes that they’re actually playing each side on a turntable on the day instead of relying on a recording of some sort, but the promos I’ve heard during the week keep mentioning “the original vinyl“, “the warmth of vinyl” and “complete with pops and crackles“, so it might well be a needle on a record.

The Sound’s sound quality seems to be quite good, so this could be a nice way to hear some of the records you remember so well from the glory days. Good on you guys for making the effort! ASHLEY KRAMER

* They’re on 93.8 in Auckland, but all the regional frequencies are listed on their website at www.thesound.co.nz
