3D Bites

March 17, 2011

Perhaps I’m showing my age and my propensity to be a curmudgeon but I’m officially over 3D, even at the movies. 3DTV is pants (and that’s the official term I’m afraid) but the final straw to put me off 3D in general was seeing the trailer for the upcoming Thor movie and noticing the fact that it’s to be screened in 3D, with 2D “in selected theaters”.

Now admittedly that’s the deal in the USA and it will take a while for little old NZ to become quite as 3D centric as that but the thought of having to watch everything in 3D gets right up my nose. If every movie with a hint of 3D potential is screened in 3D with a only few dodgy backwater cinemas or daytime shows available in 2D, then I’ll be waiting for the DVDs even more so than I do at the moment.

No, I’m not a Luddite, I just don’t like technology being forced on me for technology’s sake. Yes, I enjoyed Avatar but it would have been spectacular in 2D anyway and the dirty, smeared and scratched glasses were a pain in the proverbial.

Funnily enough, I don”t seem to be the only one who thinks like this. Some people I chat to feel the same and the consensus on the Witchdoctor forums thus far is very much anti 3D. Give me a good movie any day of the week, rather than something mostly reliant on 3D to sell itself. Yes, I think film makers are precisely that lazy.

Back to my ancient stereo hi-fi I guess, maybe I’ll even drag a diamond through some slices on a round piece of black stuff just to be awkward.

  1. I’m with you. Find some technology that doesn’t involve the glasses and I’ll reconsider!

  2. I agree 100%. The 3D technology we see in domestic TV’s is a gimmick, introduced to try and sell TV’s in a stagnant flat panel market. It is disorientating and migraine inducing, offering only disadvantages to the viewing experience.

  3. Avatar is a good example, I first saw it in the Dolby3D format, it was underwhelming to say the least, very, very dim, lacking colour and contrast and poor detail resolution. Seeing it in 2D on a big screen with a 1080 projector was a revelation. I’ll stick to the 2D version every time thanks.
