Let’s face it, bashing out screeds of text on a phone is about as much fun as DIY root canal surgery. Typing using thumbs on a touchscreen keyboard is usually a long-winded typo-ridden nightmare that is best avoided for anything other than a short text or email message reply.
But a recent shoulder injury meant that lugging a heavy laptop to a media event out of town was a no-go, so what was this hapless geek to do in order to craft reviews for your reading pleasure?
As luck would have it, Logitech had just sent me the Keys To Go 2, a super compact, feather-light Bluetooth keyboard thatโs designed to bridge the gap between on-screen virtual keyboards and a proper physical QWERTY setup.
Logitech has a well-earned reputation when it comes to keyboards. For decades theyโve crafted some pretty decent QWERTY gear, so when they came up with a portable keyboard that’s their thinnest, lightest and most portable ever, we just had to check it out.
For this trip, I paired the Keys To Go 2 with my Galaxy Fold 5, which is fitted inside a nifty kickstand case. The upshot of this set-up was that I could stand my phone up to get a screen that unfolded to give me a near laptop experience. Add in the free Microsoft Office apps for Android and I was cooking with gas.
The Keys To Go 2 unit is so slim and compact that throwing it in travel luggage is no hardship at all.ย Given its compact design, I was curious to see what the typing experience was like. The keys were both snappy and responsive even if they lacked the satisfying clack of a full-sized mechanical keyboard. That said, I was typing on a wafer-thin keyboard that was best suited for knocking out quick email replies, Facebook and X posts. While the keys didnโt offer up a huge amount of travel, they felt only slightly smaller than what youโd find on a typical 12 or 14-inch notebook PC. Just don’t expect to break any typing speed records.
The Keys To Go 2 feels solid and built to last. The first thing I noticed was just how wafer-thin it is. At a mere 6mm, itโs thinner than my phone, and its 180-gram weight is crazily light. It’s built like a brick-you-know-what house, with a sturdy plastic chassis that offers little in the way of flexing or creaking. A folding lid with a magnetic catch protects the keys when theyโre not in use, adding to an extra amount of durability and protection while it’s tucked away in my luggage.
Being a Bluetooth widget, it can be paired with three separate devices. Switching between them is as easy as choosing from the three-channel keys at the top. It also has specific pairing profiles for Windows, Android, iOS and Chromebook, allowing its function keys to work differently for each OS. This feature alone makes it a super versatile option for anyone with more than one device.
The one minor concern is that the Keys To Go 2 isn’t rechargable, but is instead powered by two button batteries that need screwdrivers to be removed. Logitech says that the batteries will last for an impressive three years (assuming youโre using is for two hours each day), but your mileage will vary depending on how often and how long you use it for.
If youโre looking to use the Keys To Go 2 with a Windows or macOS device, download the Logi Options+ app, which gives you the battery level at a glance and handier still, also allows you to customise functions and special keys based on specific apps.
For use in a hotel or airport, the Keys To Go 2 really was the business. While a bigger keyboard is preferable for bashing out screeds of text on my home PC, Logitechโs Keys To Go 2 transformed my phone into a highly portable productivity powerhouse while I was on the move.
So, should you add the Keys-To-Go 2 to your tech collection? Having used it on the go, I can say that it’s hard to beat when it comes to sheer portability and convenience. While It isnโt the most comfy keyboard, it proved very convenient. If you want to travel light, or just need a keyboard that you can take anywhere, the Keys To Go 2 is hard to beat.
