The enduring Linn Sondek LP12 turntable just got even better with the smoother rotation of its new retro-fitted Karousel single-point bearing.
In a world running riot with “replacement-itis”, where every year we’re expected to jump at a newer, better model and ditch the old one, Scottish hi-fi manufacturer Linn has become a rare species.
While there’s simply no good reason for proud owners of Linn’s famous Sondek LP12 to ditch their precious turntables, from this month they can retrofit their best friend in music with the Karousel, Linn’s new precision-engineered single-point bearing.
The Karousel is said to offer smoother rotation and greater stability for even better sound.
“This innovative new take on our original bearing design has been made possible by technological developments in material science, machining capabilities and mechanical engineering expertise gained from almost half a century of designing and manufacturing the worldโs best turntable,” says Linn’s blurb.
“That vital union between the platter, spindle, bearing and sub-chassis is now the strongest weโve ever achieved.
“A new diamond-like carbon coating inside the bearing reduces friction between the tip of the spindle and the base of the bearing itself. This reduces the โnoise floorโ of the turntable, so improves musical reproduction.
“The substantial lock-nut fastening on the stainless steel housing increases rigidity at the critical point where bearing and sub-chassis come together. Enhancements to the base of the bearing include a stronger housing for the thrust pad, combined with a smaller, stiffer coated form, to improve the critical area that supports the platter rotation and mass, meaning your vinyl reproduction is more accurate and detailed than ever before.
“With Karousel the reduction in friction means that not only will this critical component have a greater lifespan, but your LP12 will continue to give you incredibly accurate listening pleasure for longer than ever before.”
The Karousel kit includes the bearing housing, sub-platter with spindle, suspension springs, rubber grommets, lock nuts, washers and earth lead.
It comes complete with belt, springs, grommets, earth wire and oil.
* New Zealand’s Linn dealer The Hi-Fi Store will be offering retro-fitting of the Karousel kit to Linn Sondek LP12 turntables from June. The cost is $1595.
