MARTIN LOGAN HAS for decades held an enviable reputation for twisting the electrostatic envelope, but the brand has been absent from hi-fi shelves in New Zealand for some years.
Happily, the iconic brand – known for its incredible soundstaging and pin-point accuracy – has returned under licence to Hamilton-based importer Harmonic Audio, run by long-time hi-fi dealer Romesh Anandaraja.
Harmonic Audio has just announced that Soundline Wellington will have the exclusive dealership for the Martin Logan range in that part of the country.
Martin Logan is renowned for its comparatively nicely priced hybrid electrostatic speakers with a high-end sound, although its top-of-range loudspeakers are, well, truly high-end in sound and price. The brand is famed for its CLS speakers from the 1980s, and with its unique Curvilinear Electrostatic Speakers it continues to push the boundaries.
Soundline in Wellington – and Harmonic Audio elsewhere in the country – will proudly support existing customers of Martin Logan speakers, and look forward to meeting the next generation of proud ML owners.

It’s great to see these speakers making a comeback. Nick Wade and myself introduced the Martin Logans to New Zealand shores back in 1987 along with Counterpoint, MIT, Quicksilver, Kimber Cable etc to name just a few. They are truly beautiful speakers to listen to and to look at!
Thanks for your comment, John. Was your introduction of MLs to NZ back then a success? Which shop did you retail them through at the time? It would be interesting to know how Kiwis reacted. It seems to me that – even though they’re reasonably priced – people have a hard come coming to terms with electrostats.
Audio Excellence was the name of the business. We sold a few to Absolute Audio and Quasar Audio in Wellington. Partnered with either the Counterpoint pre/power amps or the Quicksilvers, the sound was amazing. They attracted a lot of attention at the audio shows we use to have back then. Of course, the sharemarket crash in the late 80’s killed off a lot of the high end sales! I think we were selling the CLS for $8000 pr.
