Sennheiser Momentum Headphones REVIEW

What the hell? Fashion โ€˜phones that are just as sonically pleasing as they are easy on the eye. Surely some mistake. (And theyโ€™re comfy, too, says Ash Kramer).

ITโ€™S TAKEN SOME time for Sennheiser to get around to releasing a set of high-end designer โ€˜phones. The term designer in this case is interesting, because Iโ€™ve generally referred to this type of product as โ€œfashion โ€˜phonesโ€ but the Momentum over ear headphones owe little to fashion. While theyโ€™re certainly a reaction to a trend, that of premium, distinctive headphones intended to grab some of the massive market originally torn open by Beats, the German company has resisted the temptation to go down the bigger, brighter, shinier, whiter, bolder route that some have chosen.

WD-Sennheiser-Momentum-headphonesInstead what we have here is a set of carefully considered โ€˜phones by a manufacturer that plainly knows its stuff, having been in the game for a long, long time. So function goes very much hand in hand with form, but that wasnโ€™t entirely my first impression of the Momentums.

Features & Construction

The Momentums are beautifully presented, arriving in a luxurious zippered carry case, with two cables (one with Apple mic and remote, one without) and a 3.5mm to 6.35mm adapter. From the first instant of their unveiling, thereโ€™s little doubt that theyโ€™re a premium product. The build quality is fantastic and they feel superb, not to mention looking as classically elegant as any headphones Iโ€™ve ever seen.

The design touches are first rate. Consider the hard-wearing leather on the headband (not vegan friendly but thatโ€™s only going to freak out a small percentage of the market), the sheer genius of the angle-adjustable metal 3.5mm jack on the Apple mic remote equipped cable, or the tangible quality of the aforementioned metal Apple mic and remote. This is luxury all the way, but is it first-class comfort?

Comfort

Once Iโ€™d gotten over the initial rapture around the look and feel, I realised just how small the earcups of these โ€˜phones are. Compared to the bigger models in the Beats range or Yamahaโ€™s Pro 500โ€™s, these are truly a tiny set of โ€˜phones. One of my bugbears is having my ears scrunched up inside the cups of headphones โ€“ at best itโ€™s annoying, at worst infuriating โ€“ โ€˜form over functionโ€™ was the thought that came to mind.

Having received the โ€˜phones at work, I plonked them on my head and took them for a walk around Aucklandโ€™s CBD, expecting to fight them all the way. After a few minutes, I realised that Iโ€™d adjusted them a couple of times and then hadnโ€™t touched them again, yet they were actuallyโ€ฆcomfortable. What sorcery was this?

WD-Sennheiser-Momentum-headphones2The Momentums are rendered exceedingly comfortable through a combination of factors. Thereโ€™s the ultra soft and smooth covering on the earcups and the equally soft velvety material used on the inside of the earcups. Then thereโ€™s a cunning slope to the shape of the inner cups, and the perfect grade of foam cushioning the โ€˜phones. Add in a headband that can be moved through a huge range of tiny adjustments and itโ€™s possible to place these โ€˜phones in something close to the ideal orientation for comfort. Iโ€™m massively fussy with long-term headphone comfort, generally preferring in-ear monitors, but the Momentums were worn day in and day out for months with equanimity.

Sound Quality

As impressive as the build quality and comfort are, these aspects are shaded by the excellence of the Momentumโ€™s sonic presentation. In short, they sound more like high-quality audiophile โ€˜phones than fashion โ€˜phones, with none of the big bottom end or boosted mids that have become something of a cause celebre in that part of the market.

Overall, the tuning of these โ€˜phones is very well balanced, thereโ€™s a touch of warmth to be found but this is so finely judged that you never feel as if youโ€™re listening to syrup. Initially, these โ€˜phones sound bass light, but thatโ€™s only when compared to models that have been โ€œenhancedโ€ down below. Listen to the Momentums for a while and itโ€™s plain that thereโ€™s enough bass weight to make any kind of music feel right, but this bass is tight and impactful. The boosted bass on my less expensive Skullcandy Navigators (reviewed here) is more exciting and far punchier, as to a lesser extent is the bass on Yamahaโ€™s Pro 500 โ€˜phones (reviewed here) but thereโ€™s no question that when it comes down to accuracy at the bottom end, the Momentums are closer to the truth.

The mids are also quite special: remarkably clear and expansive but the top end is nothing less than a joy. The multi-driver, balanced armature equipped in-ear monitors from Sony and Logitech UE that have been reviewed in recent times are naturally better in this area, but the Momentumโ€™s are perhaps the best Iโ€™ve heard on any compact headphones designed to be trundled around town. The treble is lusciously extended and itโ€™s also transparent, majoring on detail presentation, with a strong ability to render the atmospherics and air inherent to the performance. Itโ€™s frighteningly easy to get lost in the nuances of an acoustic guitar with these โ€˜phones. The presentation is quite spacious despite the small size of the enclosures.

Itโ€™s worth noting that these โ€˜phones donโ€™t suffer whatsoever for being so precise from bottom to top. The bass is fulsome enough so you never want more, and dynamics are good. The detail levels are high without being so ruthlessly revealing that poor recordings, compressed files, sibilant vocalists or just generally bright music become fatiguing or annoying.

Conclusion

Theyโ€™re not cheap but there are plenty of contenders thatโ€™ll joyfully free buyers of $500 and more, so the Momentums arenโ€™t even close to being over the top from a pricing perspective.

With that in mind, itโ€™s easy to conclude that Sennheiser has totally nailed this new model. Sonically, these โ€˜phones are just superb. Theyโ€™re well suited to mobile use with both low and high quality music files but theyโ€™re also entirely happy being plugged into a headphone amplifier and fed from a high-end source, where their positive characteristics are even more apparent. Add in the premium quality, stunning looks, huge range of colours and the unfeasibly good comfort and youโ€™ve got a winner; certainly the best street-orientated โ€˜phones that have crossed my path thus far. 1. How do these compare to the Sennheiser HD 650’s which are not too different in price. I understand one is closed back and the other is open back so it makes comparisons a little difficult but I would be interested to hear your thoughts as you are a long time HD 650 owner.

  2. Hi Clinton

Good question. There’s no real comparison – in outright audio quality terms, the HD 650s are way ahead of the Momentums. The 650s are much more detailed, more spacious and just generally sound like what they were until relatively recently, Sennheiser’s flagship (non-crazy level)’phones.

As good as the Momentums are, they can’t match the 650s sonically. However, they’re different beasts – no one is lugging around a set of 650s on the train, they sound pretty flat driven by a smartphone and I’m not convinced that they’d hold up under the pounding in any event but with a good source and something respectable providing the grunt, they’re fabulous at home, standing up very well against the newer HD700s.

The Momentums on the other hand are just bloody brilliant all rounders for people who’ll spend the majority of their time plugged into a smartphone or a computer’s 3.5mm jack. The cheaper Momentum On-Ears seem to be almost as good…review coming up soon.

  3. Hey,

How are these regarding gym use/ working out? I’ve heard that they are sweat and water resistant, but how good is this feature? Thanks!

  4. I’m not a fan of wearing expensive headphones at gym or when working out – they tend to get destroyed (at least the cables do). That said, I’d be hesitant about subjecting the leather to excessive sweat, even if it’s water/sweat resistant. It’ll end up looking and feeling pretty grungy.
