Record Store Day at Southbound

April 11, 2012

THOSE OF YOU with an inkling for vinyl, and a love of record shops, might be heading down to Real Groovy this Saturday for that annual institution, Record Shop Day.

Also worth a visit on Record Shop Day, or any other, is the Southbound Record Store at 69 Mt Eden Rd, just a block or so off the main drag in Symonds St, Auckland. Why? Because it’s an almost-all-vinyl store.

To celebrate Record Store Day, Southbound will be selling the DVD of I Need That Record, a documentary about the almost-demise of record stores throughout America, for a pittance – just $10! The DVD stars the likes of Thurston Moore (Sonic Youth), Lenny Kaye (Patti Smith Group guitarist), Chris Frantz (Talking Heads) and even, uh, Noam Chomsky.

For the special day, they’re also offering storewide discounts on all stock, a range of RSD vinyl exclusives, and FREE freshly-brewed Gravity coffee.

The format wars suck

GARY STEEL has been thinking about vinyl vs. streaming vs. compact discs (etc) and just wants it all to stop.
