Sony to compete with its own tablet

April 27, 2011

It’s taken a year, but Sony has finally entered the tablet scramble created by Apple’s iPad.

And despite Japan’s post-earthquake/tsunami economy, and Sony having to compete from scratch with companies like Samsung, who were quick to respond to the tablet market, the company is adamant that their tablet’s “uniqueness” will make it leader of the pack within one year.

That’s the claim of Sony’s deputy president of consumer products and services group (what a mouthful!), Kunimasa Suzuki.

The Sony tablets will utilise Google’s Android 3.0 operating system, and will (naturally) be the first tablets to allow the use of Playstation games.

Sony’s tablets are the S1 and S2; the S1 has a 9.4-inch display and – the company says – is designed in such a fashion as to make it comfortable to hold for long periods of time. The S2 is a clamshell design, and boasts a 5.5-inch display.

No word on when they will hit the market, or how much they will cost.
